【Event Report】The University of Tokyo Safer Campus at UTokyo Project:Purple Light-Up Ceremony Held at the Hongo Campus Main Gate

In the 2025 academic year, we launched the Safer Campus at UTokyo Project, which aims to prevent gender-based harassment and violence. As one of the project’s initiatives, we are participating in the Purple Light-Up campaign organized by the Cabinet Office of Japan—an initiative that lights up towers and landmarks across the country in purple in association with the purple ribbon campaign aimed at the elimination of violence against women.

Our first Purple Light-Up was held at the main gate of the Hongo Campus from December 17 to 23, 2025. The purpose was to communicate the importance of gender equity and the elimination of harassment and violence to members of the university and local communities and to society at large as well as to demonstrate the University’s strong commitment to respect for human rights. The initial lighting ceremony took place on December 17.
