【Event Report】Comfort and Dignity: Exploring Menstrual Product Accessibility on Campus – Beyond Dispensers and Information Cards.

On June 30th, as part of the Safer Campus at UTokyo project, we co-hosted the above event with the Women’s Clinic at the Health Center, featuring guest speakers Ms. Riko Higashio, Representative Director of NPO TGP, and Ms. Emi Nakanishi from the Women’s Clinic (in collaboration with NPO TGP and the  Center for Global Education (GlobE)).

On the day of the event, we introduced the menstrual product dispenser provided by TGP and the information cards created in collaboration with the Women’s Clinic at the University of Tokyo Health Service Center.

Currently, our office is working to provide menstrual products through the dispenser (right) shown in the photo and to install information cards (left).

During the discussion time, participants shared their efforts regarding the sexual and reproductive health and rights(SRHR), women’s clinics, and the importance of sexuality education.

The event also included an introduction to the services offered by the Women’s Clinic, using photos taken inside the clinic.

After that, we held a group discussion with the participants and speakers.

We discussed the current situation and issues regarding accessibility to information, care, and services related to SRHR within the university, as well as necessary measures for improvement and desired actions. The event was attended by both students and staff, and the discussion between participants with different backgrounds was very lively.

Participants shared feedback such as, “I learned many new things,” “I hope more men will participate,” “I would like this to be made a required course,” and “I believe it is urgent to disseminate knowledge about sexual violence and LGBTQ+ issues among both students and faculty members.”

This initiative is part of the Safer Campus at UTokyo project that our office is launching, and we will continue to work toward creating a campus where everyone can feel safe and comfortable, as well as advancing efforts toward gender equality, starting with improving access to menstrual products.

Thank you so much for your participation.
